A Special Pink Saturday

Today, many of the participants at Bev's Pink Saturday will be remembering those who lost their lives on September 11th.

As a day to pause and reflect, I am dedicating this post to my young cousin, Christopher M. Duffy, taken from this world much too soon. Chris was in the second tower when it collapsed. His smile, wit, and tenacity still lives on in our hearts.

We often think we are invulnerable.. and it's a kick in the stomach when we learn that we're not.

God bless our fallen friends and family... God bless this wonderful country that we love.

I'm Feeling in the Pink

Happy Pink Saturday everyone!

I'm not much of a photographer, but I am pretty proud of this pic of one of my roses. Oh, and I'm not much of a rose gardener either...so I'm doubly proud. It worked out well that I could have this pic in time for Bev's Pink Saturday at How Sweet The Sound today.

But my post today isn't about a rose.. it's about a special project that I recently started. I've been so elated about this that I have to share about why I'm feeling 'in the pink' today!

For the last several months, I've been looking for a project here in the Kansas City area where I could do something to help our soldiers.. but there isn't a lot in this area for some reason... well, not yet anyway... but that might become another story for another day.

During the course of my research I happened upon an organization called "Soldiers' Angels" which was founded shortly after 9-11 by two Moms with children serving in our Armed Forces. 

Last year, when my oldest son was in Boot Camp, I was astounded to learn that so many of his fellow soldiers never, or hardly ever, got a piece of mail from friends or family. That just broke my heart. So with the Drill Sargent's permission and the agreement that it would be 'occasional' (can't spoil new recruits!!), I baked and sent cookies to these young soldiers. You would have thought I sent manna from heaven.. the thank you notes that I received from these young kids will be treasured for the rest of my life (yes, to you and I they are very young kids willing to make a supreme sacrifice).

Through Soldiers' Angels, I found a place where, within a matter of a few mouse clicks, I was able to adopt a soldier serving in our Armed Forces. The commitment is to write a letter a week to my soldier and a once-a-month package of whatever I would like to send (snacks, toiletries, crossword puzzles, greeting cards, etc). Now I've added to that commitment by knitting and crocheting lapghans for our wounded warriors. There are many, many ways to help our soldiers. Regardless of our opinion on issues of war, these young men and women need our support. So, I do hope you will give their site a visit and check it out to see what might work for you.

At the time I adopted my soldier just over two weeks ago, there were 408 soldiers awaiting adoption. Today, there are 1,013 awaiting some special person to adopt them through cards, letters, and a monthly 'thinking of you' package from back home.

I'm telling everyone I know about this wonderful organization and several of you have already become 'Angels'. I can't begin to tell you how much better this has made me feel knowing that I am bringing a bit of joy and a smile to someone far away from home.

Happy Pink Saturday everyone!

Today is my second post for Bev's Pink Saturday, and one for which I've been preparing since last week. And, I have the cutest little things to show you. 'Sure hope you like them.

These baby booties are just perfect for a little gift to meet a new baby and bring to the new Mom. The pattern is from my former mother-in-law who was an exceptional knitter. She taught me how to make these "kick-off-proof" booties, and many members of my family were recipients over the years. I've made these in several baby colors including blue, mint green, yellow... but for Pink Saturday, these had to be (what else but) pink. The card is made using a digital image from Isabella's Sketchbook... and lots of pink, of course. I'm always in the mood for something French...isn't this the cutest image?? (p.s...  if you don't see posts from me for a while it's probably because I ran away to France...don't put it past me!).

I'm thinking that these need to go to my Etsy shop so I can spread a little baby love around.  Whatcha think?

It's Pink Saturday!

Hi everyone... and welcome to my very first post for "Pink Saturday". I've been checking on Bev's blog "How Sweet The Sound" from time to time to see how Pink Saturday is going.. and I just had to jump in instead of stalking watching from the wings. What a nice group of ladies (well, there might be some guys participating too.. I'm just not sure) that share their lovely pink items. My friend Dru really provided the inspiration to get me motivated to jump in.

So what's Pink Saturday all about?  It's simple... it has evolved from Bev's (and her Mom's) love of the color pink. I thought that it had something to do with breast cancer/research... and it might from time to time. But it's really about the joy and beauty that the color pink represents. All I have to do is post something pink (or predominately pink) and link back to Bev's lovely blog.. The fun part is that I can share anything with you that I wish... as long as it's pink. How cool is that?

Here's what I have to show you today.. (I'll get better, I promise)

I've had this tiny (2" by 3") and so sweet book for a couple of decades... it's slightly tattered but it's a darling read. Before I remarried a few years back, it had a special place in my lovely and VERY feminine (pink) powder room, and was placed in a conspicuous (pink) spot for others to enjoy a quick read.

I miss that darling powder room!
